This forms part of the Handbrake adjusting method and you normally require a square nut to allow easy adjustment of the length of the hand brake cable.
A clevis pin and split pin are also useful when using this fork to complete the adjustment and to make service resetting a whole lot easier
This part is often rusted out. The OEM units were made a lot thinner and subject to breakage
