Laycock de Normanville A-Type Overdrive Gasket and Seal Kit   RR1518PP

The Laycock de Normanville A-Type overdrive was the original and most heavy-duty unit produced by Laycock Engineering, introduced in the early 1950s.

Because it was rugged and capable of handling high torque, it was primarily fitted to large-displacement sports cars, luxury saloons, and robust GT cars throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

* Jaguar: Extensively used on classic saloons and sports cars, including the Jaguar Mark 2, Mk VII, Mk VIII, Mk IX, XK140, and XK150.

* Standard-Triumph Saloons: The Standard Vanguard (which pioneered the design in 1948), the Triumph Renown, and the 6-cylinder Triumph Vitesse and Triumph Herald (certain variants).

* Armstrong Siddeley & Jensen: Found on early luxury cruisers like the Jensen 541.

Quick Identification & Operation

* How to spot it: The A-Type can be distinguished from later units (like the LH or J-Types) because its solenoid is located on the right-hand side of the casting.

* Gear operation: Unlike later safety-restricted units, the heavy-duty A-Type was famous for being operational on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears on many Triumph applications, effectively turning a 4-speed gearbox into a 7-speed transmission.
